According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as many as 95% of people in the United States will have been infected with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) by the time they are 40 years old. EBV creates an inactive infection in the body where it lies dormant, but can awaken and reactivate even years after initial activation. The reactivated virus has potential to cause many debilitating symptoms, including autoimmunity. This EBV screen is used to determine if you have a reactivated infection. IgM antibody is typically detectable at clinical presentation, then declines to undetectable levels within 3 months. IgG antibodies persist for life.
